If you haven’t seen any of the viral marketing Paranormal Activity is the story of Katie, a student who’s been subjected to the terrors of a ghost following her since she was 8 years old. He’d do terrible things like stand at the end of her bed, or breathe on her face.
But this ghost wasn’t polite enough to stay in her home when it burned down and followed her 13 year old self to her new home and continued to, periodically, be her personal stalker.
Now she lives with her boyfriend Micah and the ghostly activity has returned and basically makes noises like the heating turning on or doors creeking.
So far, so dull, but honestly the set up to this film works really well. The characters are somewhat believable in this “I’ve just bought a camera to catch out the ghost” story, and there’s plenty of somewhat humorous exchanges between the characters, even if some are basically a guy acting like an idiot in front of the camera, that kind of works for the context of the film.
I guess it begins to fall apart when it comes to the “scary” parts of the film, because honestly they just become fodder for a good Mystery Science Theater 3000 style riffing session. It sounded like there were many funny comments being made by the rest of the people in the cinema, my friend and I both made each other laugh out loud a few times by making comments about what was going on on screen. There was certainly more laughing than jumping, and definitely no screaming.
Several times my friend commented that Most Haunted was scarier, or even that he was bored. And for a film that’s only just over 1 and a half hours it did seem to be a bit too long, I checked my watch a few times. Despite this I have to say I kinda liked it. The set up was good, but the scares were light on the ground and there were some rather predictable parts.
All in all a fairly average film but don’t expect it to be anywhere near as scary as the hype.
